Take an African safari to Namibia and explore German castles, majestic sand dunes, Sesriem canyon and true desert landscapes while staying at Maltahöhe.
Maltahöhe is a town roughly in the center of the country between Windhoek and the South African border posts on the C14 and approximately 110 kilometers from Mariental. Often overlooked by tourists, Maltahöhe offers an excellent starting point from where to explore several of Namibia's wonderful tourist attractions. Tourist Attractions in Maltahöhe, NamibiaAccording to Willie and Sandra Olivier, An African Adventurers Guide to Namibia, Struik Publishers, 2003, Maltahöhe was established in 1900 and derived its name from the wife of the commander of the garrison at Gibeon, Malta von Burgsdorff. Although the town itself is not a beehive of activity, a few attractions in and around the town are worth a visit. To the east of the town of Maltahöhe rests the more than 40 graves of German Schutztruppe who died during battles against the Nama rebel leader Hendrik Witbooi. North of Maltahöhe on the farm Sandhof, two large pans showcase Crinum paludosium lilies after good rains. These lilies reach a height of about 17 centimeters and elephant nosed beetles pollinate the flowers. The spectacle lasts only a few days after the rain. Tourist Attractions Around Maltahöhe, NamibiaUsing Maltahöhe as a base, holidaymakers in Namibia can explore the red dunes of Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. This may take a little planning, as the dunes are 185 km away and requires an early start if visitors want to see the sunrise over the dunes. About 16km south of Maltahöhe, visitors to Namibia can explore the Namseb Game Lodge that is situated on a plateau. The lodge offers guided game viewing trips and tourists may spot giraffe, blue wildebeest, eland, red hartebeest, springbok and Hartmann's mountain zebra. Duwisib Castle is 85 km south from Maltahöhe and a popular tourist attraction in Namibia. Captain Hans-Heinrich von Wolf and his wife built this imposing castle in 1908-9. He later abandoned the castle and today the castle and the remainder of the original furniture are on display to the public.
